The Telangana Cabinet has fixed Thursday, 19 November as the launch date for a state-paid life cover of Rs 5 lakh for every eligible family. The Cabinet met in Hyderabad on Thursday, 5 November, with Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy in the chair, and Information Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy told reporters that a Siddipet rally on former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s birth anniversary would mark the start.

How families will apply

Forms will be collected from 20 November to 30 November. Indiramma committees will go door to door in the villages, and the filled forms will be handed in to tahsildars and gram panchayat secretaries. The Siddipet meeting will also open the second phase of the Indiramma saree distribution.

When the scheme was first announced in June, Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka said the state would pay the entire premium and the money would go to the family if the registered head or main earner died. He put the number of families to be covered at 1.15 crore.

Kaleshwaram repairs from December

Before the Cabinet met, Revanth Reddy held a review on the Kaleshwaram project’s three damaged barrages at Medigadda, Annaram and Sundilla. He told officials to stick to what the National Dam Safety Authority and Central experts had recommended, get every clearance in hand before November closes and start work in December. Officials put the restoration plan at about Rs 4,193 crore. The construction agencies will pay to fix defects, and the government will pay for additional works.

Ponguleti said the Central Water Commission and other agencies wanted a cut-off wall built upstream and an apron below the spillway, and the government would carry out that advice.

Ministers agreed to replace the joint SC and ST Commission with two panels, one for each community, every panel to have a chairman plus five members so that complaints are settled faster. It sanctioned 136 court posts: 56 for the new junior civil judge courts at Kataram in Jayashankar Bhupalpally district and Elkathurthy in Hanamkonda district, and 80 for courts at Siddipet, Mahabubabad, Choutuppal and Vemulawada. An ordinance will change the Telangana Fire Service Act, 1999 to lay down fire safety rules for homes, apartment blocks and shops and offices, and anyone served a survey or boundary notice will now get 30 days to appeal instead of 60.

On Deepavali, Sunday 8 November, ministers, MLAs and MLCs will celebrate with beneficiaries in Indiramma houses, of which more than 2.25 lakh have been completed. Revanth Reddy will join the celebrations in his Kodangal constituency. Ministers were also given duties for the Telangana global summit, due in Hyderabad from 7 to 9 December.
