Heavy rain ends Hyderabad’s dry spell: about 110 mm at Keesara, waterlogged roads slow Friday’s evening rush

Thunderstorms soaked Hyderabad and the districts around it from Friday evening until well past midnight, ending a long dry spell. Keesara got about 110 mm, and water on the roads slowed the evening rush at several junctions.

A heavy downpour with thunder and lightning broke Hyderabad’s long dry spell on Friday, 30 October. The rain began in the evening and went on until the small hours of Saturday across the city and the districts around it, cooling the air after weeks of humid heat.

Where it rained most

The wettest place was Keesara, in Medchal-Malkajgiri district. State rainfall data first showed 108.8 mm there and later revised it to 112 mm. Inside the city, Bahadurpura, close to the zoo, got 82.3 mm, Madhapur about 73.5 mm and Shaikpet about 67 mm. Many other localities received between 30 mm and 60 mm.

Slow roads at rush hour

The rain arrived just as offices and colleges were closing, and water collected at several known trouble spots. The Malakpet road under-bridge towards Chaderghat filled up, the approach to the Shaikpet bridge was waterlogged, and water at the bus stop by Agrasen Island held up vehicles coming from the KBR Park and Basavatarakam Hospital side. Traffic also crawled in Madhapur, Gachibowli and Ameerpet.

Traffic police were posted at the flooded stretches, and GHMC and traffic staff worked through the night to drain water from the main roads.

More rain ahead

The weather may not settle soon. The India Meteorological Department forecasts thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds over Telangana on 2 and 3 November, heavy rain at isolated places on 1 and 2 November, and fairly widespread to widespread rain on 2 and 3 November. A low pressure area over the south Andaman Sea is expected to become a depression and move towards the Andhra Pradesh coast in the coming days, as Telugu Scope reported.
