SBI profit climbs 14.3% to Rs 23,038 crore in the September quarter, with a Rs 7,288 crore stake-sale gain adding to earnings
India's largest lender also cut its bad-loan ratios again, but its shares ended 1.7% lower on a day the Sensex climbed 1,225 points.

State Bank of India, the country’s biggest bank, closed the July-September quarter with standalone net earnings of Rs 23,038 crore, up 14.3% from the Rs 20,160 crore it made in July-September 2025. The results, announced on Tuesday, 3 November, carried a one-off boost: a Rs 7,288 crore gain from selling part of the bank’s holding in SBI Funds Management, the company that runs its mutual fund business, which helped lift SBI profit above the year-ago figure.
The core lending business grew alongside. Net interest income, the difference between what the bank earns on loans and what it pays depositors, rose about 15% to Rs 49,143 crore, from Rs 42,847 crore a year earlier. The bank put its domestic net interest margin at 3.11% for the quarter.
Bad loans shrink again
Asset quality improved once more. Gross non-performing assets came down to 1.39% of advances on 30 September, from 1.47% in June and 1.73% twelve months earlier. Net NPAs, which count bad loans after money set aside for them, eased to 0.36%, against 0.42% a year ago. The capital adequacy ratio, the cushion a bank keeps against losses, climbed from 14.62% a year before to 16.09%.
Shares fall on a rising market
The stock moved the other way on results day. SBI shares closed 1.7% lower at Rs 970.25, among the few large names in the red as the broader market rallied. The Sensex gained 1,225.07 points (1.62%) to finish at 76,917.85, its fourth gain in a row, and the Nifty 50 ended at 23,810.85, with FMCG and private-bank stocks leading the climb.
