Vaishnavi Adkar and Rutuja Bhosale will play for a WTA title in Chennai on Sunday, 8 November. On Saturday they knocked out the second seeds, Poland’s Weronika Falkowska and the American Alana Smith, 6-2, 2-6, 10-8 in the Chennai Open doubles semi-finals.

That result puts an all-Indian pair into a doubles final at WTA Tour level for the first time. Shikha Uberoi reached two Tour finals in 2005 with her sister Neha, who represented the United States. The closest all-Indian result came in 2018, when Ankita Raina and Karman Thandi took a WTA 125 title, one tier below the main Tour. Sania Mirza collected 43 doubles titles, all with partners from other countries.

A tie-break to finish

The Indians led 4-1 early and took the first set without much trouble. The second set turned against them. Adkar was broken without winning a point after two straight double faults, and she later took a medical timeout to have her strapped left thigh treated. The Polish-American pair levelled the match, then opened the deciding tie-break with three straight points before Adkar and Bhosale pulled it back and closed it out 10-8.

In the final they face Naima Karamoko and Simona Waltert of Switzerland, who are unseeded. The Swiss pair beat Isabelle Haverlag and Panna Udvardy 6-4, 6-4 in the other semi-final.

Who the finalists are

Bhosale, 30, won the mixed doubles gold medal at the Hangzhou Asian Games and reached a career-best doubles ranking of 114 in October. Adkar, 21, took bronze in women’s singles at the 2025 World University Games. Both play most of their tennis on the ITF circuit, where Bhosale has 29 doubles titles.

India had a second pair in the last eight. The wildcards Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi and Shrivalli Bhamidipaty knocked out the third seeds before losing 6-3, 6-4 to Haverlag and Udvardy on Friday, 6 November, the same day 17-year-old Maaya’s singles run ended in the quarter-finals against Robin Montgomery.

The WTA 250 tournament at the SDAT Tennis Stadium in Nungambakkam ends with the two finals on Sunday. Top seed Janice Tjen meets Magda Linette for the singles title.
