Mizoram’s Chinmay Sutar makes 400 not out, only the second quadruple hundred in Ranji Trophy history
Playing just his second first-class match, the 29-year-old former Mumbai batter carried Mizoram to 581 for 9 against Nagaland. Only Bhausaheb Nimbalkar has scored more in a Ranji Trophy innings.

Chinmay Sutar, a 29-year-old batter who left Mumbai to play for Mizoram this season, has scored an unbeaten 400 against Nagaland in the Ranji Trophy. It is only the second time in the competition’s history that a batter has reached 400 in a single innings.
Sutar faced 517 balls and hit 46 fours and seven sixes in the Plate group match at the Nagaland Cricket Stadium in Sovima, near Dimapur. He reached 400 in the 155th over, having gone to tea on 392, and Mizoram declared straight away at 581 for 9. His runs came to almost seven out of every ten that Mizoram scored.
Behind only Nimbalkar
The innings is now the second-highest individual score in the Ranji Trophy. It overtakes Prithvi Shaw’s 379 for Mumbai against Assam in January 2023 and is bettered only by Bhausaheb Nimbalkar’s 443 not out for Maharashtra against Kathiawar in 1948-49. Sutar is also only the second Indian to make a first-class quadruple century, Nimbalkar being the first.
He is only the 10th player anywhere to reach 400 in a first-class innings, a list that includes Brian Lara, Don Bradman and Hanif Mohammed. Lara’s 501 not out for Warwickshire in 1994 remains the highest score in first-class cricket.
What makes the knock stranger still is that it was Sutar’s first hundred at this level. This was only his second first-class match, and no batter had previously turned a maiden first-class century into 400. The best maiden hundred until now was the 341 that Bihar’s Sakibul Gani scored, against Mizoram, in 2021-22.
Last-wicket rescue
Sutar walked in early, after the first wicket fell, and saw Mizoram slip to 146 for 4. He added 168 for the fifth wicket with Jehu Anderson, who made 69. When the ninth wicket went down, Sutar was on 231.
Mizoram’s No. 11, Lalrempuia Chhakchhuak, then held firm for 76 balls and made 14 as the pair put on an unbroken stand of nearly 190 for the tenth wicket. Sutar scored the bulk of those runs himself.
Chinmay Sutar: from Mumbai to Mizoram
Sutar played for Mumbai in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, after doing well in the city’s local leagues. He then got a no-objection certificate from the Mumbai Cricket Association so he could move to Mizoram for 2026-27.
He had already shown his form on Ranji debut in the season opener against Manipur, scoring 35 and 99. He was run out one short of a century in the second innings, and Mizoram lost that match by three wickets.
With 581 on the board, Mizoram’s bowlers now have the chance to push for their first win of the season, and Nagaland face a long innings to stay in the match.
